South Central Career Center to Offer Short-term MIG Welding Course
Registration is open for a four-week class that will cover intermediate and advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) also known as MIG or wire welding. GMAW is commonly accepted as the preferred welding process of industrial applications due to its speed and versatility. Locally, several businesses including DRS, Camcorp, and Perennial Energy utilize the GMAW process as part of production.
While this course does not qualify for the financial aid program, SCCC officials have worked to make sure the class is affordable at only $499.00 and structured to meet the needs of students. “We have had multiple conversations with local industry representatives on what specific skills are needed right now,” said SCCC Director Jim Laughary, “and we believe this course will help fill a gap for good welders.”
The course will run 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday from June 1st to June 25th. Instructor Bill Eskew brings almost 40 years of experience as a welder and inspector. “We worked to design this course so that students are actively engaged and immersed in welding for four weeks,” Eskew explained, “we will expose them to what local employers need today.” Students will receive training in basic blueprint reading and shop safety, but will primarily focus on the welding processes.
The course will be offered in the state-of-the-art welding lab at South Central Career Center’s main campus at 407 Thornburgh in West Plains. The cost for the entire course including supplies and materials is $499.00. Students will be required to provide their own welding gloves and a welding jacket.
